Project Description
The Picnic
CATEGORY: Multipurpose Furniture
MATERIALS: Igusa, Straw, and Walnut
SIZE: 77 3/4" x 41 3/4" x 15"
This furniture features a clipped Japanese floor structure installed over the existing floor, reimagining tatami—the traditional Japanese floor tiles made from igusa grass—for contemporary use in Toronto. Named "The Picnic," it offers a unique sensory experience through the scent and tactile qualities of igusa, along with the softness of the straw-filled mat, resonating with those who have experienced it. Crafted by Kyoto artisans, the tatami ensures authenticity, while the frame is constructed from reclaimed materials, Canadian walnut. A key feature is its flat-pack construction, which simplifies transportation and allows for easy navigation through tight spaces, making it ideal for urban settings.
