“A window wants to become a room.”

Project Description

Archive

WORK: Group (Responsible for Design and model making)

Archive is a collaborative, multifunctional furniture piece designed for work, rest and socializing. Situated in 401 Richmond, we were inspired by the existing structure, particularly the windows and the rich history. The shape of the window encouraged the direction of form for this furniture, creating a playful balance of arches and lines. This is also emphasized in the puzzle-like nature of our furniture, allowing several of these booths to be put together, creating rhythm and flow. In addition, we were eager to explore the multiplicity and continuity of surfaces by using a single material, blurring lines between floor, table and wall. Most importantly, the Archive tells the story of the history of 401 Richmond. 401 Richmond, originally a tin lithography factory, is now turned into a restored arts center. Tin material is used in hidden parts of the furniture, and we aim to create moments of historical recognition where old traditions are uncovered by contemporary innovations.
